How to map a network drive ?

The mapped drive is a shortcut to a particular drive on another device that will make sure you get access to the resources shared on a local network or files in a FTP server or website. It is just as a shortcut on a local hard drive having its own letter and open as if it’s in the drive. But the files are manually stored in another computer or device on the whole. Actually, mapping is something different from mounting the drive as it explores and opens remote files as if they are stored in your own computer. In case of mounting, it allows the user to open a specific file as if it’s a folder. Do you know how to map a network drive?

How to Map a network drive in Windows 10

  1. Open the File Explorer from taskbar or Start menu, or you can press Windows logo key + E.
  2. Select the PC from the left Pane
  3. From the Drive list, Choose a drive letter
  4. From the Folder box, type path of folder or the computer or you can select and Browse to identify the folder or the computer
  5. Press Finish.

OR

  1. Click on  Start button
  2. From Search Box, Type this PC , next Choose this PC search results
  3. Click on Computer and next Click onto Map network drive
  4. From window that opens, Choose a letter from Drive list
  5. From Folder Box , type path of the network folder

Where \hostnamesharename – hostname can be the name or IP address of network device

And sharename – name of shared network folder

  1. Click Browse to locate the folder you choose to map to the network
  2. Press Finish

How to map a network drive in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista:

  • Follow the Process- Start > Computer > Map network drive
  • From window that opens, Choose a letter from Drive list
  • From Folder Box , type path of the network folder

Where \hostnamesharename – hostname can be the name or IP address of network device

And sharename – name of shared network folder

  • Click Browse to locate the folder you choose to map to the network
  • Press Finish

How to map a network drive on Windows XP

  • Click on Start
  • Right-click on My Computer and choose Map Network Drive
  • From the window that opens, select a particular from available letter in the Drive list
  • From Folder Box , type path of the network folder

Where \hostnamesharename – hostname can be the name or IP address of network device

And sharename – name of shared network folder

  • Click Browse to locate the folder you choose to map to the network
  • Press Finish.

Now the mapped drive can be found under My Computer.
